If you’re a regular visitor to the Smart CBD website and blog, you’ll already know all about the benefits of CBD.

If you don’t, here’s a quick recap…

CBD is the acronym for Cannabidiol, a compound found in all plants of the cannabis family genus. To clear up any confusion, it’s important to note that CBD won’t get you high, unlike its psychoactive counterpart THC.

Though both compounds are found in cannabis plants, SmartCBD only harvests CBD from low-THC hemp plants of the highest quality. This is legal in the UK and EU, and results in a natural product that is attributed with numerous health benefits.

Raw CBD extract is used as a food supplement and is a product we at SmartCBD promote as part of an elevated and healthy lifestyle. It can be used to alleviate symptoms of everything from depression to epilepsy.

So, how does curcumin come into play within the CBD industry?

Curcumin is much less talked about, but shows potential for multiple health benefits if administered in tandem with CBD.

As a spice, it doesn’t receive much media attention, and its beneficial properties are often overshadowed by those of CBD.

What is Curcumin?

Curcumin is a substance found in turmeric, a popular spice used in cooking. Already, turmeric is gathering attention as an ingredient in homemade face masks, and has been credited with everything from being able to increase skin suppleness to a seemingly magical ability to fade acne scars.

Curcumin itself has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It’s a vivid yellow colour, used traditionally in Indian cooking to give curry its distinctive colour.

Curcumin and cancer

According to Cancer Research UK, a number of clinical studies on cancer cells have shown that curcumin has anti-cancer properties.

In 2013, a laboratory study looked at the combined effects of chemotherapy and curcumin on bowel cancer cells. The researchers concluded that “the combined treatment might be better than chemotherapy alone.”

Curcumin and CBD

It is speculated that combining curcumin and CBD may be an effective food supplement, even if the anti-cancer effects are not observed. On top of the anti-cancer possibilities, a combination of CBD and curcumin would offer multiple health benefits, including:

  • Improved sleep
  • Anti-oxidant properties
  • Anti-inflammatory properties and pain relief
  • Appetite control
  • Treatment of epilepsy symptoms
