CBD for Pets

Is CBD good for my pet?

If you’re looking to treat your pet with natural substances, you may find that CBD is the product for you. It’s been shown to offer numerous health benefits, as well as increase the quality of life of both animals and humans.

So, what is CBD?

CBD is the shortened name for Cannabidiol, a naturally occurring compound found in all plants of the cannabis family. It’s a phytocannabinoid, meaning it’s capable of interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system even though it is plant-derived.

CBD is non-psychoactive, unlike its sister compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the feelings of euphoria and highness associated with recreational marijuana use.

Of course, we’re not recommending that you get your pets high! In fact, though CBD interacts with feline, canine, and equestrian animals in a similar way to THC, there’s no need to worry about it kick-starting any psychotropic episodes in your pets.

Which CBD oil should I buy for my pet?

When choosing CBD oil for your pet, you need to make sure that it’s safe to administer to animals. Going for an organic CBD oil will mean it is free of fungicides, solvents, and pesticides.

Which dosage should I be administering?

Regardless of the animal, you should determine a starting dose that is lower than advised to see if your pet experiences any adverse effects.

A good starting dose for dogs is 0.25mg per kilogramme of their bodyweight. Do not administer it all at once – instead, opt for smaller mini-doses two or three times a day. If you’re worried that the dosage you’ve chosen isn’t right for your pet, get in touch with us for recommendations.

So, how can CBD help my pet?

Studies have shown that CBD may be just as effective in pets as it is in humans at treating a variety of ailments.

Anxiety

Does your pet suffer from separation anxiety or a fear of loud noises? In humans, CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety induced by public speaking, PTSD, and even generalised anxiety disorder.

Cancer

CBD and other cannabinoids have been shown to have anti-tumour effects on living cells.

Seizures

In humans with epilepsy, CBD has been effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of seizures. Animals with seizures (dogs in particular) are typically treated with potassium bromide or phenobarbital.

Though these drugs are effective in reducing the seizures experienced by the animal, they can be extremely harmful to the liver. CBD is a natural substance proven to have a positive impact on seizures, meaning it may be useful as a natural alternative to the harmful drugs mentioned above.

Pain

It can be heartbreaking to watch your pet go through pain, especially if it is unexplained or as a result of an additional health problem. CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory substance and can lessen pain felt by your pets, particularly within the bowels and intestines.

Appetite & Nausea

A common problem that pet owners face is getting their animal to eat. CBD has been shown to help regulate appetite and reduce nausea, which may be effective in getting your pets to eat properly again.
